Fritz Winter designated a significant part of his artistic legacy to the care of the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen. The aim and condition was to transfer the holdings into an independent, non-profit foundation. This was established in Munich in 1981. With the stipulated purpose of ‘advancing science and research as well as art and culture through the support of young talent’, the foundation continues Fritz Winter’s life’s work. The painter saw his artistic work as a contribution to humanity’s great and far-reaching quest for knowledge.
Since 1986, the foundation has honoured its purpose with the award of the Fritz Winter Prize. In addition, Fritz Winter’s work has been explored and presented to the public in different art-historical contexts and juxtapositions. The most qualitatively valuable core collection of the Fritz-Winter-Stiftung, comprising 158 paintings and works on paper, has been on indefinite loan to the Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen since 2017.
